Kerala Varma Thampuran, a Govt. Ayurvedic physicican, approached Kochanujan Thirumulpaad of his (Kerala Varma) “Sambandha Bhavanam” * , Thruchaatukulam Kuzhuveli “Kovilakom” (Principal Manor, estate etc. of a princely/feudal lineage ) and made him offer his land at Vaalaayil to the Church. This piece of land with rivulet and forest resembled like a winged tail protruding to the backwaters was a shelter for creatures like crocodiles,Seal, Python etc. The place attained the nick name “Vaale” (tail) because it looked like a tail extended upto the Kaithapauzha backwaters. The “Kurishupalli” (Shrine) built there also derived its name Vaale church. Even today people from other faiths call it the same name. Devotees built a shed and installed a statue of St. Antony there and started worshipping it. In 1922, the Vicar of the Parish at Aroor, Fr. George Menesis, blessed the church and christened the place as Paduvapuram. Since then the church began to be known as Paduvapuram Church. The main offerings of Paduvapuram Church are “Bhajana irikkal” (continuous chanting of hymns, conducting prayers, attending discourses without interruption by continuously sitting there for a desired number of hours / days), “Adima Irikkal” (taking of a vow to make one subservient to the Saint like his slave) and “Puzhukku nercha" – puzhukku offering - (a very simple steamed food consisting of rice dough and jaggery). It is believed that deformity of a child got cured because of the ritual “bhajana irikkal” which still continues here even now. Making “Puzhukku” in various shapes of human organs is the main offering here to cure various ailments. Hence the feast is also called as “Puzhukhu perunnal”. During the days of the feast, believers, cutting across various religions, continuously make this food, get it blessed and deliver to devotees at the church and its premises, is a specialty of this place. This feast is being celebrated during the Malayalm Month “ Kumbham” and hence people from other religion call it Kumbham Thirunaal (Kumbham feast). Irrespective of Caste, Religion and Race, Hindus and Muslims flock to the Kumbham feast of the Church. The water from the pond situated in front of the church is considered sacred as it has cured many ailments. Even today, during feast season, devotees drink water drawn from this pond for their well being. The relic installed in the church is built at Barcelonoa, Spain, has got a height of 6 ft and is made in Plaster of Paris. The yearly feast is being celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of February month. The Shrine built in the name of St. Antony was elevated as a Parish on 19th February, 1078, by the then Bishop of Cochin and Panavally and Perumbalam became its associate Shrines. The parish had tremendous development during the time of first Vicar Fr. Spriyaan Mulleparambpil. The succeeding Vicars built Shrines in the name of St. James Apostole and St. Joseph at Vaduthala East and Thruchattukulam West respectively. Later, the Little Flower Church at Perumbalam became an independent Shrine .
